All Comments for CrimeJamaican Menby Jerry from Atlanta Face reality. Rape is a major problem in Jamaica. I have been in Jamaica on and off for over thirty years. Jamaica men are very macho and are aggressive toward women of all races. Most rapes go unreported and if reported the man is seldom punished and if he is convicted, the sentence is not as severe as in other countries. It is assumed that female tourists are attracted to Jamaican men and that most of the women are on holiday there to meet Jamaican men. I have not in recent history known of any prosecution in the rape of a tourist and few in any rape. The resorts don t want the publicity and the police are, if interested in the case, overburdened with crime in general. Some attacks on tourist have been quite brutal. The most recent attack that I remember was off the beach at Negril, when a resort employee attacked a woman who was snorkling off a boat. She identified the attacker right away, but he was never prosecuted. Take Care. Jamaica - off the beaten pathby Mikey from NYC Jamaica is a extremely safe for tourists. Most of the crime is relegated to the ghettos i.e. garrisons. I think the best way to experience JA is to get off the beaten path and go explore the country. Places like treasure beach and St. Elizabeth, Blue Fields and Roaring River are precious oasises filled with beauty and kind people. When you get away from the tourist traps like Ochie, Negril and Montego bay there are not the pushy hustlers trying to sell you something with each step, rather you find kind people going about their business. It just like in NYC, you don't go to times square if you want "real" New York experience because its filled with hustlers who prey on tourists. Jamaica here we comeby Jennifer from Coolum Queensland Australia From the minute my daughter Brooke knew there was such a thing as reggae music and that Jamaica was a real place on this earth she has wanted to go. Bob Marley and other Jamaican singers of freedom have hit the number one chart here in our house for the past 20 years..... now on 6th april 08 my daughter now 21 and me now 53 are finally going. Lonely Planet book has been great. I honestly believe that commonsense will prevail just like in any other country in our world.. I will come back to this site on return and let yous all know how we faired.... Love Jamaicaby Crocs from Atlanta, Ga. I love my island, yes crime is there but isn't it everywhere, the people are friendly, the food is good, the beaches are excellent, I go back twice a year if I can, love it love it. Loving Jamaicaby Tiffany from Bronx, New York I am traveling back to Ochi for the second time this year. I travel by myself back and forth, I am a 21 year old female from NYC. I haven't encountered anyone disrespectful in Jamaica, nevermind life threatening. went to Jamaicaby Thaly from Montreal Well let me tell you. I'm going back and danger is all around us not just in Jamaica. Girls be careful what clothing you wear when you alone. Jamaica make me happy. REAL-JAMAICAby Ava Golding from UK Glad to discover this site, really informative and for me represents the Jamaica I know - the Real Jamaica! No more fear of Jamaicaby Mari from Miami Springs, Fl. We visited Ocho Rios this past July(2007) and are in love with the beautiful island and it's friendly people. I was concerned for my safety as well as the safety of my two teenage daughters. We booked a tour thru Carnival for a catamaran ride, snorkeling, & Dunn's River and had a fabulous time. Everyone we encountered were respectful & accommodating. We also walked around the shopping areas and beach. The taxi driver's with the red tags are the ones you`re suppose to use (I believe they are the ones that are licensed to drive tourist around). They are helpful and honest about which parts of the area to stay out of. We were offered marijuana, but "no thank you" did the trick. Don't miss out on this lovely island! Jamaican Funby Slim from United States I have been visiting Jamaica since 2001 and has continued going since at least twice a year. I have had no experience involving the Jamaican men disrespecting me or even being rude. I do know that they feel American women are needy for attention and love so they feel to give it to us once we get over there. And it works because they all know what to say and how to say it to us. I travel over there and have become a family to a whole village and I talk and they talk and I find out a lot. So the love and respect is so real and if they see you are lacking attention or love or your depressed believe me they will help you out and you will too be traveling back and forth. I love'em and the respect they have for one another over there. Respect! Awesomeby Thomas Martinez from Albuquerque, NM Our party of four had the pleasure of visiting Jamaica on July, 06. We meet so many nice people who showed us the county side of Kingston. Out tour guide and driver were wonderful. Jamaica Crimeby Rileigh Smith from Palmetto, FL I have never been to Jamaica! But I have always wanted to go! But know that I have read this article I am having second thoughts about going but I do think this article is a good idea to show visitors because I would have never thought about any of that stuff in a million years. So thank you! I look forward to visiting beautiful Jamaica! Pure Negativityby Emma from London, UK I would just like to add that Jamaicans are being classed as animals by these comments. Rape is an isolated incident and does not denote the behaviour of the island in general. These crimes happen all over the world daily and dealt with accordingly. I'm mixed race of Jamaican and British heritage, and am disgusted that people are advised not to go because of so called inhumane treatment. It is not culture for Jamaicans to attack or disrespect visitors. They welcome tourism with open arms. Its a beautiful country with beautiful people. Replyby Victim from Florida I was not referring to all Jamaicans as animals, just the two alleged perpetrators. I agree that there are bad people everywhere unfortunately. you call any HUMANS animals!?!by Jamaica Guest from PDX How can you call people animals? The rapist in your case may have been an isolated incident! The fact that you cannot recognize this makes you a pig! No one deserves to be assaulted, especially having their sexuality violated, but categorizing a whole nation of people as one is really sick! I have traveled to Jamaica and find some of the customs and beliefs to be disturbing, but the same is true when I think of many of my own countrymen. Women are raped every day in the US and many of our own people live in poverty without proper policing units to protect them as well. If you are really disturbed by the lack of safety maybe you should invest in the infrastructure and empowering the people rather than blaming, generalizing and putting them down. My Wife Was Raped At Couples Negrilby Victim from Florida We are totally devastated. If you can avoid visiting this country do so at all costs. If you must go, make sure you are never alone especially if you are female. Security at our hotel was a joke. They often were asleep or selling drugs. Our lives will never be the same after our assault by these Jamaican animals. Jamaican Menby MsJ from Cleveland, OH I have to agree with the previous comment. Its very obvious Jamaican men love women, and THIS WOMAN loves them too. Prefer them over American men. That may be an extremely unfair statement since I was born and raised here. But fact is fact. Jamaicans do not rape visitorsby Native Jamaican from MoBay It is not the norm for Jamaican men to rape visitors. Back to Crime Leave Your Opinion |
