Jamaican Men

by Jerry from Atlanta

Face reality. Rape is a major problem in Jamaica. I have been in Jamaica on and off for over thirty years. Jamaica men are very macho and are aggressive toward women of all races. Most rapes go unreported and if reported the man is seldom punished and if he is convicted, the sentence is not as severe as in other countries. It is assumed that female tourists are attracted to Jamaican men and that most of the women are on holiday there to meet Jamaican men. I have not in recent history known of any prosecution in the rape of a tourist and few in any rape. The resorts don t want the publicity and the police are, if interested in the case, overburdened with crime in general. Some attacks on tourist have been quite brutal. The most recent attack that I remember was off the beach at Negril, when a resort employee attacked a woman who was snorkling off a boat. She identified the attacker right away, but he was never prosecuted. Take Care.

Jamaica - off the beaten path

by Mikey from NYC

Jamaica is a extremely safe for tourists. Most of the crime is relegated to the ghettos i.e. garrisons. I think the best way to experience JA is to get off the beaten path and go explore the country. Places like treasure beach and St. Elizabeth, Blue Fields and Roaring River are precious oasises filled with beauty and kind people. When you get away from the tourist traps like Ochie, Negril and Montego bay there are not the pushy hustlers trying to sell you something with each step, rather you find kind people going about their business. It just like in NYC, you don't go to times square if you want "real" New York experience because its filled with hustlers who prey on tourists.
One Love.
P.S. For heavens sake make sure that you leave your hotel and get out and explore. Places like Sandals perpetuate fear so that you stay and spend all your money at their hotel. There is nothing to fear.

Jamaica here we come

by Jennifer from Coolum Queensland Australia

From the minute my daughter Brooke knew there was such a thing as reggae music and that Jamaica was a real place on this earth she has wanted to go. Bob Marley and other Jamaican singers of freedom have hit the number one chart here in our house for the past 20 years..... now on 6th april 08 my daughter now 21 and me now 53 are finally going. Lonely Planet book has been great. I honestly believe that commonsense will prevail just like in any other country in our world.. I will come back to this site on return and let yous all know how we faired....

Loving Jamaica

by Tiffany from Bronx, New York

I am traveling back to Ochi for the second time this year. I travel by myself back and forth, I am a 21 year old female from NYC. I haven't encountered anyone disrespectful in Jamaica, nevermind life threatening.

I absolutely love it. My best friend lives there and I just starting traveling to see him last year when he moved back home to his parent's house in St. Ann's Bay parish. I would suggest anyone with the opportunity to go to Jamaica, to seize it, it's amazing.

went to Jamaica

by Thaly from Montreal

Well let me tell you. I'm going back and danger is all around us not just in Jamaica. Girls be careful what clothing you wear when you alone. Jamaica make me happy.

REAL-JAMAICA

by Ava Golding from UK

Glad to discover this site, really informative and for me represents the Jamaica I know - the Real Jamaica!
I was particularly pleased by the "Jamaica Dangers" section - HALLELUJAH, THIS SECTION REPRESENTED MY VIEW ENTIRELY !! So, so, true, "Jamaica is depicted now and in the past as a crime ridden, dangerous place to visit....FAR FROM THE TRUTH..." I couldn't have written it any better!
I'm visiting again shortly (long overdue) and look forward to once again, spending my time in JAMAICA with its wonderful climate, people, music, culture, history, foods, fun, spirit and first class hospitality - NO HOLIDAY DESTINATION DOES IT BETTER!!

No more fear of Jamaica

by Mari from Miami Springs, Fl.

We visited Ocho Rios this past July(2007) and are in love with the beautiful island and it's friendly people. I was concerned for my safety as well as the safety of my two teenage daughters. We booked a tour thru Carnival for a catamaran ride, snorkeling, & Dunn's River and had a fabulous time. Everyone we encountered were respectful & accommodating. We also walked around the shopping areas and beach. The taxi driver's with the red tags are the ones you`re suppose to use (I believe they are the ones that are licensed to drive tourist around). They are helpful and honest about which parts of the area to stay out of. We were offered marijuana, but "no thank you" did the trick. Don't miss out on this lovely island!

Jamaican Fun

by Slim from United States

I have been visiting Jamaica since 2001 and has continued going since at least twice a year. I have had no experience involving the Jamaican men disrespecting me or even being rude. I do know that they feel American women are needy for attention and love so they feel to give it to us once we get over there. And it works because they all know what to say and how to say it to us. I travel over there and have become a family to a whole village and I talk and they talk and I find out a lot. So the love and respect is so real and if they see you are lacking attention or love or your depressed believe me they will help you out and you will too be traveling back and forth. I love'em and the respect they have for one another over there. Respect!

Awesome

by Thomas Martinez from Albuquerque, NM

Our party of four had the pleasure of visiting Jamaica on July, 06. We meet so many nice people who showed us the county side of Kingston. Out tour guide and driver were wonderful.

Appleton Rum Tour Rocks. We loved the respect and care given to us. The humble spirit of the Jamaican people is a welcome. We felt safer in Jamaica then in our home town.

Jamaica Crime

by Rileigh Smith from Palmetto, FL

I have never been to Jamaica! But I have always wanted to go! But know that I have read this article I am having second thoughts about going but I do think this article is a good idea to show visitors because I would have never thought about any of that stuff in a million years. So thank you! I look forward to visiting beautiful Jamaica!

sincerely,
Rileigh Smith

Pure Negativity

by Emma from London, UK

I would just like to add that Jamaicans are being classed as animals by these comments. Rape is an isolated incident and does not denote the behaviour of the island in general. These crimes happen all over the world daily and dealt with accordingly. I'm mixed race of Jamaican and British heritage, and am disgusted that people are advised not to go because of so called inhumane treatment. It is not culture for Jamaicans to attack or disrespect visitors. They welcome tourism with open arms. Its a beautiful country with beautiful people.

I was not referring to all Jamaicans as animals, just the two alleged perpetrators. I agree that there are bad people everywhere unfortunately.

I was just venting a bit over a very upsetting situation. And I do think it is important for all tourists to be aware and take precautions.

you call any HUMANS animals!?!

by Jamaica Guest from PDX

How can you call people animals? The rapist in your case may have been an isolated incident! The fact that you cannot recognize this makes you a pig! No one deserves to be assaulted, especially having their sexuality violated, but categorizing a whole nation of people as one is really sick! I have traveled to Jamaica and find some of the customs and beliefs to be disturbing, but the same is true when I think of many of my own countrymen. Women are raped every day in the US and many of our own people live in poverty without proper policing units to protect them as well. If you are really disturbed by the lack of safety maybe you should invest in the infrastructure and empowering the people rather than blaming, generalizing and putting them down.

My Wife Was Raped At Couples Negril

by Victim from Florida

We are totally devastated. If you can avoid visiting this country do so at all costs. If you must go, make sure you are never alone especially if you are female. Security at our hotel was a joke. They often were asleep or selling drugs. Our lives will never be the same after our assault by these Jamaican animals.

The police are a joke as well. The police station in Negril is a total dive with paint peeling off the walls, bugs crawling on the floor, goats wondering around the parking lot. The "officers" were all hanging out at the station watching TV, napping, talking on their cell phones. I sincerely doubt these rapists will ever be found. For all I know they are currently on the prowl waiting for their next victim. They may even be hotel employees. We'll never know because the hotel refused to allow us to view the photos of their employees.

Jamaican Men

by MsJ from Cleveland, OH

I have to agree with the previous comment. Its very obvious Jamaican men love women, and THIS WOMAN loves them too. Prefer them over American men. That may be an extremely unfair statement since I was born and raised here. But fact is fact.

Jamaican men are not afraid to show they care for a woman wherein too much ego gets in the way here at home. I believe American men need to take note from foreigners & especially Jamaican Men and get their act together.

And believe me, I've had experiences from the very wealthy to the average American and they don't even compare.

Go on Jamaican Men with your baaaaaaad selves! In all fairness the American woman is usually looking for one thing $$ and that may be the reason the men are so much like they are. Who knows. Who really cares as long as you are able to feel the way you want to feel when you are with the one you want to be with.

Jamaicans do not rape visitors

by Native Jamaican from MoBay

It is not the norm for Jamaican men to rape visitors.

It might be that we are friendly and love women, but they are less likely to get raped here than anywhere else. Also some pages suggest that we are not in line with more developed countries, but this is not true. I know you have to write what you believe, but you must give an honest account of the situation. Remember that it has never being reported that a homosexual visitor have ever being attacked in Jamaica. Most of us don't condone the behavior, but we tolerate it in the name of tourism.
