Tour Guide in Ocho Rios?

I'm wondering if anyone can help me find a great "tour guide" near ocho rios. I'm traveling there in April and want help in finding the absolute best stuff around. I know you can find ganja anywhere, but I'm looking for the amazing stuff the locals smoke. I've heard of people going into farms in the mountains. Happy to do that.

Ok...sounds like scoring what I need once I get there is not going to be a problem. Here is what I have come to understand about getting the GaNj in JA when visiting.....Please Correct me if I am wrong:

1) Unless you look like the most Average Joe square individual, you WILL be approached to buy some.

2) Bottom line is that it IS illegal.

3) The fine if caught is around 20 American dollars.

4) You should be ok if you simply keep it/smoke it in your room.

5) Asking for it by name will give you a better buying experience (i.e Blueberry or Island Sweet Skunk)

6) Your guide may be the best person to ask when searching for it.

QUESTIONS:

1) Do they usually take american dollars or do you have to have Jamaican currency?

2) I assume they do take american dollars, but how much should I pay for an 1/8 in american dollars?

3) If you know Montego Bay, where is a good safe place to visit to get away from the tourist areas and chill with some locals. I would love to beat on some drums and hang for a bit.

However until something pretty dramatic happens in the world (and it undoubtedly will) herb will remain a political issue. Cannabis Sativa/Indica or Marijuana, Ganja, Hemp... is a spiritual aid, a medicine, a food, fuel and fiber that can be used in so many productive ways. People are dying of so many diseases, yet the medicine to heal them is forbidden. So many Religions and Political memberships, yet the wars keep on rageing with no end in sight. Someone once said 'what the world needs now is love sweet love...' It is ironic that one of the tokens of lovers in their expression of this most precious act is the gift of flowers; why not the Hemp, Cannabis, Marijuana or Ganja Flowers. Love is the way forward from all these many years of slavery, crime and terror that we as a people have endured by the hands of misguided violent so called leaders. Naz raps 'if i ruled the world, i will free all our sons...' The freedom of Ganja and all our people will usher in a new era of Peace that will begin to heal the world from its many sickness and diseases. Hey, I've been to Jamaica 3 times and the ganja is plentiful. We barely got out of the airport and were offered a nice supply that lasted us the week and then some. Don't risk bringing it with you- you won't have any problems getting some upon arrival. We freely smoked on our balcony at our resorts and nobody even looked twice. The maid will even straighten up around your stash :-)

I would just like to say thank you to everyone for their comments. I'm planning a trip to Jamaica early next year, and I really had alot of questions about the marijuana. I would like to be able to smoke in JA, but now I am undecided, because of some of the comments that I read. And I read all of them... I do smoke in the states, but hell, its illegal. I really did believe it was legal to get super high in JA. I'm very disappointed to find out that its illegal in JA. I heard this was some of the best shit you will ever smoke. Should I go ahead, take a chance, and smoke when I take my first trip to JA? Someone please let me know what I should do...

I've read both sides of the marijuana issue, and some are saying smoke if you want, telling you how to get it, and that its ok. On the other hand its been said that there's crime, and corruption in JA from the marijuana. They also said that everybody smoke it everywhere all the time, and on the other hand it was said more americans smoke than the jamaicans. Which is it? Can I get the true story, and or an o.k.?

I've been to Jamaica 4 times now, (returning in 72 more sleeps) and each time had no problem finding what I needed/wanted. I even had a bell man deliver to my room each day. I'd call him up, and he'd drive right up with his golf cart, come on in and fix me right up.

Now, you want some good stuff, header up to Nine Mile (Bob Marley's birth place). No problem in finding what you need. And yes, the Blueberry is the weed of choice (sweet stuff).

I'm going to Ocho Rios over my B-day (Dec 30-Jan 6) and I really want to score some good weed. Three things.
1. What is the name of the best Jamaican weed around? If I'm going to Jamaica, might as well shoot for the best eh?
2. How much does weed usually cost in Jamaica?
3. Is it possible to get seeds anywhere, and how much would they cost to buy? I have a friend who sells marijuana and he works with a lot of growers who would pay serious cash for even one seed.

Ganja Easy

We got hit up for some smoke on shuttle from the airport and the resort. Our driver was fairly discrete.

We look like a typical American middle aged couple... I'm sure he knew that approaching us about smoke could go either way. He probably figured we looked creepy and straight enough that he couldn't come right out and offer to sell.

So he took the time to chat, get to know us. He offered to hook us up with whatever we wanted, smoke or blow. Told him we weren't interested in the blow... but some smoke would be nice.

So he hooked us up with some of the greatest ganja I we ever smoked. We even ate some... goes great with the resort's sweet rolls, eat a joint's worth and about 4-5 hours later enjoy the best buzz you ever had!

My take on smoking in public is that you need to be discrete. At our resort, I caught an occasional whiff of smoke, but didn't see anybody smoking openly aside of a few locals. And that was only off the resort.

Although we kept our smoking to our room, I didn't get the feeling that we'd be busted for smoking more openly. Just wanted to be a bit on the careful side.

As I am married to a Jamaican man I am not against smoking weed but my man has weed enhanced psychosis and has been sectioned a number of times, so to say weed is safe to smoke is somewhat to be questioned? I do believe it is a safe drug but if your brain cant handle it then steer clear coz my husband cant handle it I'm going through hell when he does smoke it, yet all his friends are fine smoking it. I just got back from a cruise with a stop in Ochi. If you go to Jamaica, you have to get some ganja. It was amazing to see people sitting on their porch smoking it up. I tweaked a little, mainly because of the men and boys are so up front wanting American women. I actually had one guy asking my permission to "love my daughter". Tell you guide if your wanting to spark up. He is there to take care of you.

I think the government is trying way to hard to bring the people down over nothing. Trees don't harm, it the people who over-consume that harm. An that goes with everything in life...ex. Too much money/greed= corruption....to much alcohol/licks=recklessness/corruption....to much ya-yo=lack of judgment/corruption. anything done in moderation can be tolerated by society...and the same should go for weed. The world is a crazy place, but to make it an offense to smoke a natural plant that relaxes the mind and body, don't make sense. I think we should get some of these politicians high and look from a different perspective. lol

Don't just say"you got any weed" they are gonna give you the carp of the crop. I think they should legalize weed if anything because its one of the only drugs that you can still know what you are doing unlike alcohol or harder drugs! Everyone is freaking out over the weed. I just got married there in Feb 2007 and my husband and I smoke it everyday in Wisconsin. In Jamaica EVERYONE has it and you WILL be offered that and Coke (which we don't touch...anymore) all the time. It's EVERYWHERE and everyone sells it. Don't freak out. I've been there 3 times to Montego Bay and Negril and my husband has been there 4 times. We are now "Jamerican's" as the locals tell us.

Life Expectancy

I just got back from Kingston Jamaica. Although it may be true that 20 to 40% of Jamaicans smoke the "high grade" (which is what everyone selling it referred to it as) to include life expectancy in the same article does not depict an accurate explanation of the reason for the reason for the average life expectancy of the average Jamaican. For example during my one week stay there were 8 reported murders in the news! Jamaica's corrupt political environment and economic strife is more directly responsible for the average life expectancy of their people rather than how many smoke weed!

I just got back from Jamaica yesterday... I am a white female, late 20's and was approached daily by locals trying to sell me weed. I don't mind at all! It is hard to believe people who come back saying they were not offered or asked at all! I think the ones who are ignored probably fit the typical "Joe Tourist" role, don't look as if they would try anything outside the box and are really missing out on the Jamaican experience! When speaking to many of the locals, they commented on a some 80% of the population as being marijuana smokers. Based on my travels and what I saw, I would have to say that this is more accurate than the 2-4% I saw quoted in other postings!

Well, I toke up and love it. I have one question to put this to rest once and for all.
How many people have died from THC (marijuana) overdose? The answer, NONE.
Compare that to alcohol related deaths and you will see how ridiculous it is to criminalize a perfectly safe way to relax. Lets face it, marijuana is here to stay and if it was taken off the black market it would solve a lot of the social problems that come with greedy street vendors and smugglers. Colorado just decriminalized it last year and I'm am perfectly comfortable lighting up a joint in my den.
By the way, marijuana has not made me lazy and deviant. I still work long hours and save the pot for the weekend like a lot of other drinkers. The difference, I will not be laying in a pool of my own vomit and needing to have my stomach pumped for smoking too much.

I also, a repeat traveler to Negril. I return for how wonderful the people are. It's always sad leaving friends I've made over the past 3 yrs. Cant say I wasn't offered the ganja the minute I stepped off the plane. I'm more then happy to contribute my money to Jamaica and it's people. If even that little bit I spend can help with food, clothes, and shelter then my trip is well worth it. I do smoke mostly to help stress. No better way. I think legalizing it would be great for there economy. Who is it really hurting anyway? It's a plant it's nature. The gov. wants control over everything. Born, grown, and never left Ja for more than week, I have to say that the stats for regular usage is a bit high. I would say that probably 10% use it regularly, and by that I mean more than once a month. In any event Jamaica and Jamaican teens and adults seem to have more sense than the foreign counterparts. I was listening to someone on the radio who mentioned all the teens drinking unchecked at the all inclusive parties, and while in theory that sounds bad, I don't know anyone that has crashed while drunk or high. And I know Alot of party people, esp as I'm a dj. In general I think we as a nation exercise a commendable level of responsibility in controlling our vices. I would not legalise ganja because big brother would probably impose some sanctions on us, but barring that I see no reason why it shouldn't be legal.

Just for the record is illegal in Jamaica and you can be arrested for even one spliff and this is a fact. I have been arrested for it but the fine is only US $1.50 or JA $100 for 1 spliff. (smile) Jamaica No Problem. That supports the popular JA saying.
If you are a genuine weed smoker for the right price you can meet a good guide that can take you to two or three places where you can get some of the finest ganja and meet the real authentic Jamaican maroons and the police cant touch you while you are there cause they are a government within the government and you can smoke all you want. To introduce myself, I am a 20 year old female who has just booked for her 5th vacation to Jamaica. When I had visited this site previously, the impression was made that Ganja was illegal yet decriminalized in Jamaica. However, now as I read through the updated information, it seems apparent that Ganja is indeed legal. Would somebody please be able to verify this for me? During my first 4 vacations, I will admit that I was offered Ganja numerous times, but was not haggled if I had turned down the offer. I am very pleased to hear that Ganja is legal as I am an open smoker. However, I must add that the Ganja is not my sole purpose of traveling to Jamaica. I absolutely love the people and the culture. I hope that more outside travelers who do intend to smoke are aware of the legalization of Ganja as I feel it would improve its sale and profits the the Jamaican people. A lot of times I had turn down offers solely for the purpose that I did not want to get caught breaking the law. With it being legalized I feel that many many more tourists will be comfortable purchasing it and therefore help the Jamaican people.

I think that Weed is 10 times better for you than alcohol. You can die from drinking to much and smoking weed it doesn't hurt you that much at all. I smoke weed at least 6 times a month and i love it. It makes me feel good and not have to worry about anything. And Drinking makes you feel like shit, and when you drink too much you can either die from it or get a really bad hang out and do things your not supposed to be doing. I think that people should be able to go out and smoke a joint without worrying about getting in trouble with the law. That would be so cool to just do that. I hope that in the next few years that legalize it in the United States.

Some say legalise it but, I ask, will the benefits be the same. The price of ganja will decrease if it is legalised and so the ganja market will collapse eventually. Besides, labeling it as an illicit drug gives it that mystique. If the government is smart, they will realise that a lot of income is earned from marketing ganja so keeping its use illegal will benefit the country greatly.

The government should legalize it. They can make a shit-ton of money. Check it out. The government makes $5+ Billion off of alcohol taxes a year. The government spends $4+ Billion on prevention of marijuana. This doesn't even count the $5-7 Billion each STATE spends on prevention. Now, do the math. Stop preventing= $300+/- Billion with the states and federal government combined. That's a lot of money right? Well check this out. Marijuana taxes add to that. So now instead of spending this $300 +/- Billion each year they are making money. This not only means more money for them because marijuana smokers will pay higher taxes at a store to buy it, but also happier citizens because they aren't paying taxes to prevent it. Everyone wins.

I personally don't care what others do. Like someone else said... people smoke more in the states than they do in Jamaica. I am half Jamaican and I think it should also be legalized. In Ca, America I see and smell more people walk around smelling like weed and looking high all of the time, then I do in Jamaica. People slang more and die over weed in America. How many times do you hear about people dying in Jamaica about some weed... Come on now, this isn't even true. People are just mad because us Jamaicans get along with everyone... one love! stay rasta!

The reason why no one offers weed to you is quite simple, I guess.

You don't look like a pothead, and that is why they don't want to sell it to you. I think that weed should be illegal, because, if you have a look at Morocco for example, you can see that it is a major factor whether weed is part of the country's tradition or not. In Germany the brewing of beer has been normal for hundreds of years... just like the weed-growing in Morocco or Nepal oder anywhere else.

All you have to do is walk the streets of Port Antonio to know that ganja is a favourite past time for the people and not just something that the tourist partake in. Maybe someday the people will wake up and stop letting the governments lie about the dangers of pot!

Time has shown that the reason ganja is illegal is that the lawmakers, having just had their vodka martinis at lunch, spend the afternoon nodding off while taking calls from their friends and supporters - the liquor industry. Why legalize a product that can't reap huge profits for a corporation...

I'd rather do weed than cigarettes, but unfortunately for us South Africans, we are heavily guarded against weed usage. I suggest they focus their energy on drugs at every street corner and human trafficking and all that jazz, and let us be with our holy smoke.

my opinion on Marijuana is legalize throughout the world just like alcohol (which causes far greater problems than Marijuana). This way everybody can make some money and enjoy a smoke doing it. Governments can regulate by charging taxes and make some extra money for education. It's a double standard, alcohol is more taxing to the body and far more dangerous than weed, and you can buy it anywhere, it's plugged on every tv and radio station. Well don't get me started.

this is my opinion, I live in Amsterdam and you can buy and smoke weed everywhere and we have directors of big companies smoking together with college students, Great!

i have been to jamaica 12 times and i have only been offered ganja one time. i would say that maybe 2% of the people i met smoked it. Jamaica is a great island the people are great.

I am sure that your statistics are more accurate than the web sites...PROBABLY NOT. And who cares what percentage smokes weed! Let everyone hang out and enjoy themselves in Jamaica. If they want to smoke, leave them to it because they paid for their vacation so that they could do whatever they want!! Obviously no one offered you any weed because who would want to waste their time or weed on someone closed-minded like you!

I disagree with the report on Ganja use in Jamaica.

There is no way 20-40% Jamaicans use ganja on a regular basis (more like 2-4%) and in my 52 years I have never been offered a ganja spliff or any such thing at any kind of party. Even at reggae sum-fest people may sell ganja openly but 90% of the smokers are Americans.
