My tour bus was riding through one of the most lush green, picturesque parts of Ocho Rios. It was a long drive from Montego Bay, but well worth it. Suddenly, the bus made a very sharp turn up a steep hill. How cool! Up the hill a short distance was the resort I was going to stay at...The Crane Ridge Resort. I was immediately pleased upon seeing the open air check in gazebo. You are up on a hill here so the cool breeze was quite refreshing as it was such a hot day! Check in was polite and very efficient. The next day I went to ask a question and the young guy who works there called me by my proper name. The gazebo also contained a tour desk where you can purchase tours at a reasonable rate. I was also informed that the Crane Ridge Resort has its own private beach and free beach shuttle. It's called Mahogany Beach (very nice...I did take the shuttle there the next day...not crowded, but all the services you need there...even a lady who gives great massages!) My room was lovely - exactly as it appeared in the brochure. I thought of the room as kind of "cabiny" with the louvered windows that basically are built sort of open. However this is safe so don't worry about that. I never got a single bug bite either so they must now be drown to that area much. The pool is incredible and so was the restaurant. Free continental breakfast in morning with the best fresh squeezed orange juice, coffee, cereals, muffins, pastries, all kinds of bread and a toaster to toast your own bread, cream cheese, jams, and you can order eggs, bacon, and more for a small fee. One more thing I might add is that there is a small gift shop where you can pick up small toiletry items you might have forgot. I got a beautiful good quality beach towel during my stay. I found the Crane Ridge Resort to be in a fantastic location with great services. Remember, if something in your room isn't perfect, call and they will come running to fix it. Don't be embarassed to request service...the people will be happy to accommodate you in any way for a dollar or two tip. I think the Crane Ridge Resort has a great thing going and I will definitely stay there again!
Our stay at the crane Ridge could have been a fabulous experience if it wasn't for a sum of minor but regular nuisances. First of all why does the "sound system" (Radio and TV) have to blast for almost 24 hrs a day at full throttle and not just at the pool , I mean all over the compound. Having to awaken and fall asleep to a sound track from hell has a rather mericless quality to it. The setting and layout are great, the rooms are clean and acceptable, the housekeeping was good and they were the friendliest of all of the staff and the hardest working. Therefore the only ones deserving a tip. I especially enjoyed the organic pest control system. Ferral cats making love and war outside my window was another added feature. As for the breakfast: the fruit selection was awesome but it got old having to practically prostitute yourself for a second cup of coffe in the morning, given you ever got your hands on the first one. The pool with the swim up bar is great. I also did not appreciate having Babylon yelled at me from the bushes at the taxi stand.Generally speaking at the Crane Ridge, don't expect smiling faces with only one or two genuine exceptions. To end on a positive note the place was pretty.
I have been to Ocho Rios, Jamaica twice before and stayed at the Renaissance Jamaica Grande. I made a big mistake on trying out a new location. The Crane Ridge was not what I expected. The only thing I enjoyed where the bar tenders and the guest that I met on the resort. The female lobby and wait staff were very unpleasant. If you stay on the 1st floor, beware of lizards and other creepy crawling things. Also they do not like to give out towels and the hot water ran out frequently. There were not any activities on the resort therefore very boring at night. I would not recommend this resort to anyone. I will be staying at the Jamaica Grande next year which by the way is great!!! |
