I have read with great interest the reviews on the "Rene". People either seemed to love the place or they hated it with a passion. I loved the place. For the uninitiated, Ocho Rios is 2 HOURS away from Montego Bay. AND THE TRIP OVER IS BY BUS! People who had booked at the Rene were SHOCKED upon learning the ride over was two hours; my advice to them...catch a clue before you book the hotel! The bus ride is ok, you take a break after an hour, and you get to see the "real" Jamaica (as in the poverty, the small villages and towns, etc.). The road over is pretty rough but then again, what did you expect in Jamaica - a 5 lane paved freeway!!! The hotel was built in 93 so its not the newest but it has great charm and all the essentials. The rooms are nice, very clean, and the staff are very accommodating (even though the resort is all inclusive, take some gold dollar coins and tip those who have served you; you tip when you visit NYC, London, or other places so please remember to tip in Jamaica because it is actually very much needed and appreciated). Food was of high quality and plentiful. My only critical critique was of the beach (its a little rocky, and the water off the beach is very rocky). All in all however a very enjoyable stay. Go with an attitude that you are going to enjoy yourself and you will. Go with an attitude of the ugly pampered American and you will find it a VERY BUMPY stay. Cheers...
We recently vacationed at the Jamaica grande - 8/22/03 to 8/29/03. Myself, my husband and my two children really had a great time. Overall the service and staff were great. They were very accomodating. The rooms at the South Tower were much larger than the rooms at the North Tower. The food and drinks were unbelievable. You can just eat and drink all day. I don't see how anyone could complain about not having anything to eat. There were numerous choices from the Chinese Reataurant to the buffet. The rooms could use some upgrading, but besides that, everything was just grand!!!!
My husband and I stayed at 3 different resorts in Jamaica. Renaissance was by far our favorite! The food was much better and had great selection. The entertainment was awesome. The beaches were okay, could be bigger. The pools are so fun to be in you forget about the beach! The only negative thing I had to say was it was a little loud at night when you want to sleep.
I just returned on 9/5/03 for 9 nights in the Ren. Jamaica Grande. The hotel lobby is very open, airy and beautiful....especially in the evening. We arrived in the early afternoon and were greeted by someone with a tray of cold washcloths and a fru-fru drink with a pinapple, cherry, complete with a little umbrella. Very nice touch! We were in the south tower, so we had to go down to the first floor, cross a breezeway and into the south tower. Thank goodness the elevator is only one level because I don't know how, but that is the HOTTEST elevator I have EVER been on before! The lights are like roasting lights! No biggie though. ROOMS: They were average. Nothing spectacular, but kept tidy and they even provided extra towels. We had an ocean view room. BEACH: I was a bit disappointed in the beach. I have been to Jamaica many times and had not been to a beach with so many rocks and seaweed. You could get up to about thigh high and be in thick seaweed. I would definately bring some water shoes. (even though I am not a big fan of them myself) It rained for a couple of days. The hotel lobby and walking areas are EXTRA slick!! This also happens when folks run through the lobby after getting out of the pool. POOL: I did not swim in the pool, but to me it looked very pretty, but the water was a bit cloudy. It closed on September 1 - 15 or so for remodeling. BARS; Jamaican Me Crazy is the disco there. They play more reggae music than I anticipated being in a resort. I loved it! The drinks there and at all the bars were very good as well. FOOD: NOT impressed! I saw several folks had mentioned the food in other reviews and I must say I agree with the majority of reviews I saw. It was basically 'substance' and not much else. I even strayed from the buffet and went to the chinese and italian restaurants. The italian was by far the best, but not 100% in my book. Whenever the weather cooperated, we chose to leave and go out to other restaurants after trying all the places there. SUMMARY: The hotel is average and the food - not great. To me, it was not worth the $$$$. |
