Ganja (marijuana) is everywhere in Jamaica, and you're almost certain to be approached by hustlers selling drugs. The street sale of drugs is a sad pandemic that has corroded society and led to frightening levels of violence. Possession and use of drugs in Jamaica is strictly illegal and penalties are severe. Roadblocks and random searches of cars are common, undertaken by squads of well-armed police in combat gear (professionalism is never guaranteed, and 'dash' - extortion -is often extracted to boost weekly wages). If you do buy drugs in Jamaica, don't be stupid enough to try to take any out of the country. If you get caught in possession, you will not be getting on your plane home, however small the amount. A night (or a lengthy sentence) in a crowded-to-bursting Jamaican lock-up is dangerous to your health!

Smoking a Jamaican spliff or chillum will pack an almighty punch. Many Jamaicans are used to smoking cigar-sized joints with their first breath of air every morning without noticeable side effects. You can't. It's not unknown, too, to find cocaine is actually Aj ax. Women should be aware that so-called 'date rape' drugs have become common at clubs and private parties.

If you plan on hiking off the beaten path, it's wise to do so with a local guide. Many areas in the hinterland are centers for ganja production. Strangers (especially white travelers) are often suspected of being undercover US Drug Enforcement Agency agents. If you accidentally stumble across a large ganja plantation, you could put your life in jeopardy.

Cocaine and other narcotics. It is not unknown to find cocaine is actually Ajax. It is not wise to partake of any narcotic while in Jamaica or anywhere else in the world for that matter.

Marijuana is a herb. It can be used for healing, religion, and relaxation. It can be abused, as any substance.

Smoke if you choose, for medicine, for health, for insight, for spirituality... it's your choice and right.
Just be aware that there are idiot goons lurking-with their alcoholic breath- waiting to pounce and drag you off into their hell.

Be careful, be discrete, and be respectful of the herb.

Ganja should be legal. For tourists coming to smoke in jamaica they should not have to worry about the consequences of smoking or being caught with a few spliffs. I'm not saying they should be any less strict on smuggling policies because marijuana is not legal in a lot of other places in the world and it should not be allowed to be exported at any extent.
