Coyaba

On a lovely strip of private beachfront, this small all-inclusive resort evokes a British colonial atmosphere without any of the regally snobbish aura of Round Hill. Unlike other expensive resorts in the area, with their international styling, this place retains a genuinely Jamaican feel because it's run in such a personal way. It therefore tends to attract families with young children. Set a 15-minute drive east of downtown Montego Bay, it's centered around an adaptation of an 18th-century great house.

Accommodations in the main building here overlook the garden; those in the pair of three-story outbuildings lie closer to the beach and are somewhat more expensive. The decor is plantation style, with traditional prints, expensive chintz fabrics, French doors leading onto private patios or verandas, and mahogany furniture. Hand-carved bedsteads, often four-posters, are fitted with luxury coverings. Roomy bathrooms have combination shower/tubs. More than 30 bedrooms have been refurbished, some upgraded to junior suites with small refrigerators and such special amenities as irons and ironing boards. The hotel's most formal restaurant, the Vineyard, serves first-rate Jamaican and Continental dinners. Less upscale is Docks Caribbean Bar & Grill.
