Cosmo's Seafood Restaurant & Bar - Seafood/Jamaican

One of the best places to go for local seafood is centered around a Polynesian thatched bohio (beach hut) open to the sea and bordering the main beachfront. In this rustic setting, Cosmo Brown entertains locals as well as visitors. You can order his famous conch soup, or conch in a number of other ways, including steamed or curried. He's also known for his savory kettle of curried goat and the freshly caught seafood. Unless you order expensive shellfish, dishes are mostly inexpensive, making the place friendly to the budget traveler.

Da Gino's - Italian

Four octagonal, open-sided dining pavilions, separated from Negril's beachfront by a strip of trees, evolved as the escapist dream of Gino Travaini, the Italian owner. Pastas and bread are made fresh daily on the premises every day. Good chef's specialties include linguine with lobster, filet of beef with peppercorns, various forms of scaloppini, and heaping platters of grilled seafood. On the premises are a dozen very simple huts, octagonal and camp-like, that rent for between $60 and $80 double occupancy each, depending on the season. Each has a TV and a very basic kitchenette, but no air-conditioning.

Gambino's - Italian

Adjacent to the more visible and better-known Mar-garitaville, with an outdoor deck that opens directly onto the sands of the beach, this restaurant mixes Jamaican and Italian food better than almost any other eatery in Negril. You might begin with a psychedelic house special drink (they include Beachcombers rum punch, a Miami vice, and a strawberry daiquiri); then head for a chair at one of the wrought-iron tables for a meal. Menus here run to fresh salads, grilled fish, spaghetti alfredo, veal or chicken parmigiana, and a very good version of fettuccine with lobster.

Hungry Lion - Rastafarian/International

Some of the best seafood and vegetarian dishes are found at this laid-back alfresco hangout on the cliffs. Instead of the usual Red Stripe beer, you can visit the juice bar and sample the tropical punches with or without rum. This is a cozy, two-story, green-painted concrete-and-wood building. The first floor has an open-air section with booths inside, but on the second floor it's all windows. Menus change daily, depending on what's available in the local markets. About seven main courses are offered nightly; not only seafood and vegetarian platters, but many tasty chicken dishes as well, even shepherd's pie, lasagna with callaloo, grilled kingfish steak, and pan-fried snapper. Lobster is prepared in many different ways, and everything is accompanied by rice and peas along with steamed vegetables. The homemade desserts are luscious, especially the pineapple-carrot cake, our favorite.

LIU Pub - International

Built from concrete, with an outside that's painted red and white, the place doubles as a simple 10-room hotel. But it's best known for the restaurant, atop a cliff 35 feet (11 m) above the sea. Meals might consist of grilled fish, especially snapper filets, several different preparations of shrimp, grilled steaks, burgers, or salads, including an especially flavorful version made with lobster. You'll find this place around the corner from Rick's Cafe. The 10 rooms at this hotel occupy five concrete "villas" set within the garden; all have air-conditioning and ceiling fans, none has TV or phone.
