Goldeneye

Few other hotels in the world manage to be so luxurious and yet so appealingly informal as this intimate retreat. It's centered around the villa where the most famous secret agent in the world, James Bond (007), was created in 1952 by then-owner Ian Fleming. Fleming built the imposing but simple main house in 1946, and wrote each of the 13 original James Bond books there.

In the early 1990s, music publisher-turned-hotelier Chris Blackwell bought and restored the by-then dilapidated property to its original modernist dignity, retaining an airy simplicity in the main house while unleashing a series of sophisticated British decorators to enrich it with Balinese antiques and sculptures. Fleming's original desk remains, and the overall decor of oversized Indonesian furniture is enhanced, Hollywood-style, with memorabilia from the Bond films. The main house is usually only rented as a three-bedroom whole for large parties, often to rock stars and celebs.

You're much more likely to rent one of the four villas that were built on the surrounding property. Each evokes a tropical version of a billionaire's summer camp in Maine, thanks to a juxtaposition of indoor and outdoor spaces, sofas, and well-chosen decorative pieces. Each unit has a fully equipped kitchen. All drinks and food, and most activities, are included in the price. There's a pool on the premises, but it's reserved for occupants of the main house. Masonry paths lead to a beach.

Grand Lido Sans Souci

If a cookie-cutter Sandals resort is the last thing you want, head for this classier joint-a pink, luxurious resort that recently completed a $7-million renovation. It's located 3 miles (5km) east of town on a forested plot of land whose rocky border abuts a good white-sand beach. This Grand Lido is far more elegant than the Grand Lido Negril. There's a separate clothing-optional beach, a mineral bath big enough for an elephant, and a labyrinth of catwalks and bridges stretching over rocky chasms filled with surging water.

Each unit features a veranda or patio, copies of Chippendale furniture, plush upholstery, and subdued colonial elegance. Some contain Jacuzzis. Accommodations range from rather standard bedrooms to vast suites with large living and dining areas, plus kitchens. Deluxe touches include glazed tile floors, luxurious beds, and marble bathrooms with whirlpool tubs. You'll enjoy the food at the elegant Casanova restaurant.

Renaissance Jamaica Grande Resort

This family favorite is the largest hotel in Jamaica, a combination of two high-rise beachfront properties constructed in 1975 and 1976. In 1993, an elaborate cluster of waterfalls and swimming pools was inserted into what had been parking lots between the towers, and the entire complex was unified into a coherent whole. The place is pure theatrics and special effects, like a Hollywood production, but is short on true Jamaican style. It seems to be meant to overwhelm guests. Today, the end result boasts more beachfront than any other hotel in Ocho Rios and a comfortable array of public rooms (often filled with members of tour or conference groups). The standard bedrooms are tile-floored and furnished with Caribbean furniture; each opens onto a private balcony, and contains a midsize private bathroom with tub and shower.

Main St. (P.O. Box 100), Ocho Rios, St. Ann, Jamaica. 720 units. Winter $467-$617 double. Off-season $430-$490 double; $740-$1,200 suite. AE, DC, MC, V. Amenities: 5 restaurants; 5 bars; pool; 2 tennis courts; gym; watersports; children's program; room service; babysitting; laundry service. In room: A/C, TV, kitchenette (in suites), mini-bar (in suites), coffeemaker, hair dryer, safe.
