Sandals Dunn's River Golf Resort & Spa

Located on a wide, sugary beach, this is the finest of the Sandals resorts. It occupies 25 well-landscaped acres, offering attractively furnished and quite spacious accommodations. All rooms have an Italianate/Mediterranean motif, scattered among the six-story main building, two outbuildings, and a five-story west wing. Extras include spacious balconies, walk-in closets, king-size beds, and tub/shower combos. Before retreating to the disco or enjoying the nightly entertainment, guests can choose among several dining options that at least attempt variety in lieu of first-rate cuisine; the International Room is elegant, with fabric-covered walls and rosewood furniture. The West Indian Terrace serves Caribbean specialties. D'Amore offers Italian cuisine, and Restaurant Teppanyaki serves Chinese, Polynesian, and Japanese dishes.

Sandals Ocho Rios Resort & Golf Club

This resort, on a good sandy beach, attracts a mix of unmarried and married couples, including honeymooners. At times the place seems like a summer camp for grown-ups; it's the most low-key of the Sandals properties. Is it romantic? Most think so, although we've encountered other pairs here whose relationship didn't survive the 3-night minimum stay.

On 13 well-landscaped acres a mile (2 km) west of town, it offers comfortably furnished but uninspired rooms with ocean or garden views, plus some cottage units. All units are reasonably large, with king-size beds and good-size bathrooms with tub/shower combos. You can sip drinks at an ocean-side swim-up bar. Nightly theme parties and live entertainment take place in a modern amphitheater. One unique feature of the resort is an open-air disco. Restaurants here serve Italian food, above-average Jamaican cuisine, and sizzling good steaks.

Starfish Ocho Rios

The latest Ocho Rios all-inclusive, this Super-Clubs chain resort opened in autumn 2001 right on the beach in the heart of Ocho Rios, adjacent to the crafts market. It is a remake of the rather dull and laid-back former Club Jamaica; this is a complete renovation. Catering to singles, couples, and families, it offers plenty of activities, with entertainment and both land and watersports. The best units are the good-size ocean rooms, and they're also more expensive. But the standard rooms are adequate as well, and comfortably furnished. Each unit comes with a midsize bathroom with tub and shower. There is a wide range of facilities, from piano bars to pool bars, Italian eateries to Japanese restaurants, and Sumo wrestling to beach volleyball. The supervised kids' program caters to ages 6 months to 12 years.
