Shaw Park Beach Hotel

A longtime favorite, this hotel is built around a broad beach of golden sand in a private cove. This 1,500-foot (457 m) private beach is, in fact, its most alluring feature. Lying 2 miles (3 km) east of Ocho Rios and 4 miles (6 km) from Dunn's River Falls, the complex opens onto Cutlass Bay. Built in a vaguely Georgian colonial style, it stands on a hilltop and 25 acres of landscaped grounds. A little drama is created by the artificial waterfall cascading down a rocky course. In all, there is the lingering aura of Ocho Rios in the 1950s here, although bedrooms are fairly up-to-date, with tub/ shower bathrooms.

Oceanfront units are midsize to spacious, most opening onto a private balcony or terrace. Each comes with a tiled private bathroom with tub and shower. There's entertainment here, albeit a bit corny - it's the kind of place where you're invited to join the limbo line. Reggae dancing, fashion shows, and even bingo try to keep the crowds amused. Better is the array of watersports, from boat tours and cruises to sailing and scuba diving. This hotel has long catered to families, and there is a kiddies' wading pool plus a children's play area with a supervised care program.
