Comfort Suites Crane Ridge

Overlooking Ocho Rios, this handsomely landscaped property offers one- and two-bedroom suites, each easily accommodating one to four guests. Because of the large size of the accommodations, and because each has a kitchen, this is a family favorite. The location, on seven tropical acres of gardens, is not on the water, but a free shuttle runs back and forth to a private beach. Each room offers a separate living area, British colonial-style furnishings, a patio, and good-size bathrooms with tubs and showers. Note that children age 13 and older are charged the same full rate as adults.

Hibiscus Lodge Hotel

This intimate little inn offers more value for your money than any other resort in Ocho Rios. Perched precariously on a cliff along the shore near the Ocho Rios Mall, it has character and charm-and the golden sands of Mallards Bay Beach lie a 3- to 4-minute walk away. Medium-size bedrooms, either doubles or triples, have small, shower-only bathrooms, ceiling fans, and verandas opening onto the sea. After a day spent in a pool suspended over the cliffs, or lounging on the large sundeck, guests can enjoy a drink in the unique swinging bar or a meal at the Almond Tree.

High Hope Estate

Because this hotel is so intimate, whether you like it depends on whether you click with the owner and guests. It's conceived as a tranquil, private home that accepts paying guests, in the style of the British colonial world at its most rarefied. The grounds, set 550 feet (165m) above the coast and 7 miles (11km) west of Ocho Rios, thrive with flowering plants and memories of such luminaries as Noel Coward, who used to play the grand piano that graces one of the public areas. There are absolutely no planned activities here. Staff is on hand to help with child care, maintenance, and meals for anyone who gives advance notice. Bedrooms are a delight-spacious, well thought out, and exceedingly comfortable. The excellent bathrooms have tub/shower combinations. The nearest beach, however, is a 10-minute ride away.
